SaaS & Modernization
Rescue Aging Software Safely
We rescue aging business systems step by step, replacing parts safely while the old system keeps running, so critical operations are never put at risk.
Overview
Legacy Software Modernization
Legacy systems often run essential processes, yet the people who understood them have moved on, documentation is thin and the technology is hard to hire for. Codemotives starts by recovering knowledge: reading code, interviewing users, capturing business rules and mapping data flows, so that the real behavior of the system is written down before anything changes.
We then favor incremental replacement. Using the strangler pattern, new components take over one capability at a time behind a routing layer while the old system continues to serve the rest. Data is migrated in verified stages. This keeps the business running, shows progress early and lets you stop or change course if priorities shift.
Context
Problems we solve
- 01
Lost system knowledge
Undocumented rules live in old code and in people's heads. Replacing a system without capturing them breaks processes quietly.
- 02
Big-bang rewrite risk
Replacing everything at once ties up budget for a long time and often misses behavior users depend on.
- 03
Fragile data
Decades of inconsistent, duplicated or oddly encoded records complicate every migration.
- 04
Obsolete platforms
Unsupported runtimes, databases and hardware add security exposure and make fixes slow and costly.
Capabilities
What we deliver
- 01
System discovery and mapping
Code reading, data profiling and stakeholder interviews that produce documented business rules and dependency maps.
- 02
Strangler-pattern replacement
New services take over functions gradually behind a proxy or API layer, with the legacy system retired piece by piece.
- 03
Data migration and cleansing
Profiling, cleaning and moving data in verified batches, with reconciliation reports at each stage.
- 04
Characterization tests
Automated tests that record existing behavior so replacements can be proven equivalent.
- 05
Integration wrappers
APIs placed around legacy systems so new software can use them while replacement is underway.
- 06
Roadmap and retirement plan
A sequenced plan with checkpoints, so each phase delivers usable value and the old system has a clear end date.
Where it fits
- Replacing a desktop or client-server business application
- Moving off an unsupported database or framework
- Wrapping a mainframe-era system with modern APIs
- Documenting an undocumented inherited application
- Retiring spreadsheet-and-macro processes
Technologies we use
- .NET Core
- Java
- Node.js
- PostgreSQL
- SQL Server
- Docker
- REST APIs
- Apache Kafka
Approach
How we deliver
- 1
Discover
We learn your goals, users, constraints and existing systems before proposing anything.
- 2
Plan
Scope, priorities, architecture and milestones are agreed so everyone knows what ships when.
- 3
Design
User flows, interfaces and technical design are shaped and reviewed with you early.
- 4
Build
Work is delivered in short iterations with regular demos, so progress is always visible.
- 5
Test
Functional, integration and performance checks run throughout, not only at the end.
- 6
Launch & support
We deploy, monitor and keep improving the product after it goes live.
FAQs
Common questions
Have a question that is not covered here? Get in touch.
Should we rewrite or modernize incrementally?
Incremental modernization is usually safer because the business keeps running and you learn as you go. A full rewrite can make sense for small systems or truly unmaintainable code. We assess both options and give a recommendation with reasons.
What if nobody understands the old code?
That is common. We reverse engineer behavior from code, databases and user workflows, and write it down as part of the project. This documentation is often valuable by itself.
How do you protect our data during migration?
We work under NDAs with controlled access, rehearse migrations on copies and run reconciliation checks before and after each move. Production data is only changed after the rehearsal results are reviewed with you.
How is this different from application modernization?
Application modernization covers updating applications broadly, often cloud-related. This service focuses on genuinely old or poorly understood systems, where recovering knowledge and staging the replacement are the main risks.
