BigCommerce, Open and Scalable
BigCommerce is a hosted platform with an API-first design. We build themes, headless storefronts and integrations that take advantage of it.
Overview
BigCommerce
BigCommerce is a SaaS commerce platform that hosts the store, checkout and payments while exposing a broad set of REST and GraphQL APIs. Built-in features include multi-currency support, product variants, and a number of B2B capabilities, so fewer paid apps are needed for common requirements. Themes use the Stencil framework with Handlebars templates.
Its open architecture makes it a good candidate for headless commerce, where BigCommerce runs the catalog and checkout while a separate front end, for example in Next.js, handles presentation. We build Stencil themes for conventional stores, and headless storefronts when design, speed or multi-channel needs justify the extra work. We also integrate ERP, PIM and marketplaces, and migrate catalogs from other platforms.
Context
Why teams choose it
- 01
API-first flexibility
Comprehensive APIs make it straightforward to integrate other systems or build a custom front end.
- 02
Fewer apps for core needs
Many features that need paid add-ons elsewhere are built in, keeping the stack simpler.
- 03
Hosted reliability
The vendor handles hosting, security updates and scaling, so teams avoid infrastructure work.
- 04
Good for headless
Catalog and checkout APIs separate cleanly from the presentation layer.
Capabilities
What we build with it
- 01
Stencil theme development
Custom themes with Handlebars and modern build tooling, tuned for speed and merchandising.
- 02
Headless storefronts
Next.js or similar front ends using BigCommerce's Storefront GraphQL API and checkout.
- 03
App and API integrations
Custom apps and middleware connecting ERP, PIM, shipping and marketing tools.
- 04
B2B and multi-channel
Company accounts, price lists and selling across marketplaces and social channels.
- 05
Catalog migration
Moving products, customers and orders from other platforms with redirects and data checks.
- 06
Optimization
Page speed, search, analytics and conversion improvements on existing stores.
Typical projects
- Headless stores with a custom front end

We deploy, monitor and keep dependencies and versions up to date.
FAQs
Common questions
Have a question that is not covered here? Get in touch.
BigCommerce or Shopify?
Both are hosted platforms. BigCommerce offers more built-in features and open APIs, while Shopify has a larger app and theme ecosystem. We compare them against your catalog, channels and budget.
Do we need to go headless with BigCommerce?
No. Many stores run well on Stencil themes. Headless is worth considering for unique experiences or multi-channel needs, with added build and maintenance effort.
Can you migrate our store to BigCommerce?
Yes. We map and import catalog, customer and order data, set redirects to preserve search rankings and test before launch. Some custom data may need restructuring.
Can BigCommerce handle B2B?
It has features such as price lists and customer groups, and B2B Edition adds company accounts and quoting. We confirm what fits your requirements before design begins.
